The mission of the James Otis School is to provide a challenging instructional program designed to promote the intellectual and social development of every child. We do this internally, as well as working, in concert, with families and numerous community organizations. As a result of such efforts, in 2014, the James Otis School was named the first, “Family Friendly'' school, in Boston. At the James Otis School, we know it is the small things that matter most, so we strive, every day, to live up to that “Family Friendly” school recognition. Whether it is the principal and staff greeting students and families by name in the morning, or engaging students in cooperative learning activities, they are happy to have been in school. When students arrive at the James Otis School, it is a place where they feel safe and inspired, and where parents feel welcomed and supported. Despite culture, economics, race, religion or any other delineating factor, school to home communication is frequent, positive, always in multiple languages, and encourages parents to be active participants in their children’s learning.
