1st grade is bubbling over with energy and enthusiasm. During our Literacy Block students are expanding their phonics skills, recognizing new sight words, and developing strong reading strategies through Fundations, Close Readings, and engaging in the Lucy Calkins Reader's Workshop model. In Everyday Math we continue practicing combinations of ten, graphing the weather and solving complex word problems. Writer' Workshop is buzzing as we deepen our study of Lucy Calkin's narrative, informational, opinion, and informational writing units. Finally, in our Extended Learning Time, students explore and experience learning about different countries through North, Central and South America!

Welcome to First Grade! I am thrilled to be back in the classroom this year. Our first grade family will be focusing on learning about each other, our similarities, our differences and how we can strongly support each other through this different year. Our library will constantly grow as we find what we individually and as a group need to read about next! Get ready for a fun and engaging year! In my many years in BPS I have taught K1, First grade, K-2 Intervention, and Early Childhood Special Needs and Inclusive classes. I adore a fabulous classroom library so that is a continual work in progress! During my free time I love going on adventures with family and our beloved dog Gravy. Our two teenagers still keep us busy and our house has lots of music creeping out of the windows and doors. Nola is learning to play bass guitar and has spent many years participating in Rebel Shakespeare while Coe plays fiddle and electric guitar. All Are Welcome in our class so stop by and visit!
I am so excited to be teaching 1st grade SEI at the at the James Otis! My name is Deana Fetherston and this will be my 9th year at the Otis! I grew up right here in East Boston, so the Otis and my students hold a special place in my heart. First grade is an exciting year for students and we will have lots of fun learning and exploring. I look forward to helping my students develop new skills and create educational opportunities to help them grow! I received my masters degree in elementary education from Merrimack College. When I am not in the classroom I love to spend time with my family and friends especially my two girls Nina and Romie!
