Kindergarten 1
In k1 at the Otis, we use the BPS Focus on K1 curriculum for literacy and the Building Blocks curriculum for math. Through the focus on K1 curriculum, the students learn about Families, Friends, Colors, Wind and Water, Shadows and Reflections, and Things that Grow.  We read a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts, and students participate in a wide variety of theme related, hands on centers designed to develop pre-reading, reading, and writing skills.  Many of our Focus units also have themes that lend themselves to scientific inquiry and experimentation. During math, students work on number sense, shape recognition and attributes, and patterns through many different games and activities.  During Extended Learning Time, K-1 students will learn about the countries of Peru (Mrs. Katz), Jamaica (Ms. Jarvis), and Japan (Mrs. Mehdizadeh).  The Kindergarten teachers at the Otis work hard to get to know each student and his or her individual needs, this allows us to differentiate our activities and lessons so that each child is getting what he or she needs.

My name is Mrs. Katz. I've been teaching at the Otis since 2006. I love teaching Kindergarten 1, because in K1 learning and play go hand in hand. Together, we sing, dance, read, play, and learn. As the youngest in the school, the Kindergarten 1 students never cease to amaze me with what they are able to learn and accomplish. When I am not in school, I love spending time with my two boys, playing, reading, and going to the beach.

Hello, my name is Nancy Thompson! This is my third year with The Otis, but my 8th year teaching kindergarten and I am excited to start another school year! When I'm not teaching, I enjoy reading, singing, and spending time outside with my family. This school year I'm looking forward to our Otis family coming together to achieve something GREAT! I wish everyone at the Otis a wonderful year full of love, support, patience, and lots of learning!
