Third Grade
3rd grade is definitely the grade where great learning takes place.  In the Reading classroom, students will explore building a reading life in our daily lives through the Reader's Workshop model.    We will also read each story in great depth by using Close Reading strategies.    Students will put into practice many skills, including predicting, making inferences as well as defining the author's purpose among others in their literature studies.   These skills will help them in preparation for taking the new MCAS 2.0 exam this spring.   In the Math classroom, students will investigate many different themes of math, including addition, subtraction, fractions, area and perimeter.   The students' favorite topic of math is learning how to multiply and divide.   In the Writer's Workshop classroom, the students will become published authors, writing narrative, informative, and persuasive writing projects based from the Common Core State Standards.   In Social Studies, students will experience learning the history of Massachusetts, starting with the Pilgrims and Wampanoag Nation.   The students will also be learning about STEM, Civics, Cursive Handwriting and Keyboarding among other topics during the Extended Learning Time (ELT).   Additionally, there will be a focus on the countries of the Dominican Republic, China as well as Australia. Therefore, the Otis third graders will be busy bees this school year!   Welcome to third grade!

Hello, my name is Mr. Prince and this will be my 12th year teaching 3rd grade at the Otis. I have so much fun teaching students multiplication, division, and fractions for the first time. By the end of the year, students will become masters in these areas of math! I enjoy working at the James Otis School because we have a dedicated team of teachers, students, and families. I also love working here because there are so many different places to eat delicious food in East Boston!

My name is Devin Galante and I am the grade 3 ELA teacher at the James Otis. This will be my fifth year teaching here! Third grade is a great year, filled with lots of reading and writing. We will explore both fiction and nonfiction text and develop skills to become better readers. We will also get to learn about the geography and the history of our state, Massachusetts! I look forward to a great year! =)

Welcome to third grade! This is my 22nd year at the James Otis School. I truly love third grade. I adore watching my students become wonderful readers and writers as well as multiplication masters. I also enjoy teaching our students about our magnificent state of Massachusetts, which is the Social Studies curriculum for third grade. Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my husband and two sons. I love to travel and be in the sun!
