3rd grade is definitely the grade where great learning takes place! In Reading. students will explore what it means to accept ourselves and others, and learn about cultures and civilizations that may be different from their own. Students will put into practice many skills, including predicting, making inferences as well as defining the author's purpose among others in their literature studies. They will have the opportunity to read and explore different genres of text. These skills will help them in preparation for taking the MCAS exam this spring. In the Math classroom, students will investigate many different themes of math, including addition, subtraction, fractions, area and perimeter. The students' favorite topic of math is learning how to multiply and divide. In writing, the students will become published authors, writing narratives, informative text, and persuasive letters based on the Common Core State Standards. In Social Studies, students will experience learning the history of Massachusetts, starting with the Pilgrims and Wampanoag Nation and ending with the American Revolution. The Otis third graders will be busy bees this school year! Welcome to third grade!
My name is Devin Galante and I am the grade 3 ELA teacher at the James Otis. This will be my seventh year teaching here! Third grade is a great year, filled with lots of reading and writing. We will explore both fiction and nonfiction text and develop skills to become better readers. We will also get to learn about the geography and the history of our state, Massachusetts! I look forward to a great year! =)
Hello, I am Ms. Smith and I am so excited for my second year teaching at the Otis! Prior to the Otis, I worked in a first grade classroom in Roxbury as well as in a Special Education setting in San Diego! I love teaching second grade and working with students to build a love of reading, writing and math that they can carry with them into the rest of their academic careers. I look forward to building relationships with my students and their families. When I'm not at school, I love going to the beach, cooking and spending time with my friends and family!
Hi! My name is Mr. Toscano. This is my second year at the Otis. I am a 3rd-grade homeroom teacher and will be teaching both 3rd and 4th-grade math. I'm originally from California but have lived in Massachusetts for 5 years now. I'm looking forward to getting to know the students and building relationships with them and their families!
