Fifth Grade
5th grade at the Otis is a very exciting time!  We are preparing students to not only enter middle school, but to enter colleges and businesses.  Focusing on the Common Core helps us to develop critical thinking and strong problem-solving skills.  Students will participate in Lexia assessments.  This assessment will also provide valuable information about students' reading, and it will help teachers and parents support students' reading progression.  The fifth grade will also be visited by professional scientists every other Friday.  Together, the students and scientists will conduct experiments and learn more about scientific concepts, like erosion, electricity, and the solar system.  Students will also have the unique experience of participating in a theatrical performance at East Boston High School in June.

I have taught at the Otis for 12 years and love everything about the neighborhood. I am married with 3 sons and a dog named Lucy. Life is busy, but I appreciate getting to know my students.

Hi! I am Ms. Hyland, and I am a fifth grade teacher. I teach reading and social studies to all the fifth grade students. My favorite part of my job is watching students become independent learners who pursue their own interests. Outside of teaching I love spending time with my family and going to the beach. My favorite book is Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse. I look forward to learning more about you and what books you love!
